Mason Aguirre
Hailing from the small town of Duluth, Minnesota USA, and claiming Mammoth as his new home mountain, Mason Aguirre has climbed his way through the snowboarding ranks to become one of the top contenders in the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour. Learning to snowboard at age 6 and turning pro at 15, Mason has brought to the table an aggressive approach with smooth style enabling him to compete with the best of the best with strong support from his friends and family back home.
Already for the 07/08 TTR season, Mason has participated in the required amount of 6 events, 4 of which are top 10 positions moving him to the position of Tour Leader. But don’t expect him to go away anytime soon. With the northern hemisphere part of the tour up and running, you can be sure to see a valiant and determined effort put forth by Mason to ensure he stays high in the rankings.
Mason has two TTR titles under his belt including the 07/08 Swatch TTR Five (5) Star Burton New Zealand Open for Slope Style and the 06/07 Swatch TTR Four (4) Star Burton New Zealand Open for Half Pipe. He also currently holds three other top ten finishes this season with a 5th in the 07/08 Five (5) Star Abominable Snow Jam for Half Pipe, an 8th in the Half Pipe and a 9th in the Slope Style at the 07/08 Four (4) Star Garnier Fructis Australian Open.
Mason has came back onto the scene in January, bringing with him his halfpipe mastery, locking in an 8th at the 6-Star Burton European Open. However Mason proved he wasn't going anywhere but up with an impressive 2nd place right behind Shaun White at the 5-Star World Superpipe Championships after boosting huge air and stomping technical spins. He continued his efforts at the 26th Annual 6-Star Burton US Open. After struggling slightly in the Slopestyle, he returned the next in full swing, bagging his final result of the season with a second in the Halfpipe between top competitors and fellow Burton Team riders Shaun White and Kevin Pearce. His excellent results earned him 6th position in the final, end-of-season TTR Rankings.
Mason is always sure to maintain a level head and keep things fun with an open personality and always feeling stoked to be riding his board. Check him out in Burton’s Thanks for Advance and keep your eyes peeled next winter as you can bet he’ll be ripping it in the half pipe all season long while simultaneously keeping competitors at bay with smooth slope style lines – a balance only attained by top TTR riders.
Interview Taken in November 2008
How does it feel to be a current leader for the TTR Tour?
It definitely is a good start to the season. There is still a lot of contests and a lot of good riders on the TTR so I’m hoping just to have fun and make some money.
You compete in a lot of competitions. How have you fit filming into the mix?
I’ve mostly filmed in the spring, but this year I’ll be filming with standard films and it will definitely be more busy going in between contests to film, but I’m super stoked for the opportunity and it should be sweet.
Any goals you'd like to accomplish for the 07/08 season both inside and outside the TTR?
I would be stoked to film a full part and finish top 3 TTR by the end of the season.
How has your riding progressed over the past couple seasons?
I’ve spent a lot more time just riding and getting more control over my snowboard. Since the beginning of last year I have felt a lot more in control of what I’m doing which has helped me learn tricks and adapt a lot faster.
If you could ride anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Probably at home in Mammoth on a sunny day. Some of my best memories ever.
You're taller than most riders out there. How do you approach freestyle riding differently than other riders?
It doesn’t really affect me that much being tall and I think it’s actually kinda rad cause the chicks dig it. I just ride and try to do things my way. I grew an abnormal 7 inches in 8th grade and have been the same height and the same shoe size ever since.
What riders are you looking forward to competing with this season and why?
FRENDS... Danny D, Lago, Kev P, Jack Mitrani, Luke Mitrani, and Keir D. they are my best homies and they are better at snowboarding than most people I know.
Any shout outs?
Thanks to all my sponsors, Steve Ruff, my family,
and the whole shred scene for being my way out.
